'Dukes of Hazzard' star John Schneider has formally acknowledged a debt of approximately $3.7 million in back spousal support to his ex-wife, Elvira Schneider, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. This admission marks a significant shift in the long-running legal battle between the two, who separated in 2014 after 21 years of marriage.

In filings submitted to the court, Schneider explained that he had initially been confused by the existence of two separate divorce proceedings—one filed in California and another in Louisiana. He stated that he did not originally believe the support order issued in California was valid. However, he now concedes that he owes the accumulated amount.

Despite admitting the debt, Schneider is actively opposing a specific enforcement mechanism: an order that would divert half of his Social Security benefits to pay off the arrears. In his filing, he argued that he is "financially capable of satisfying the accumulated arrearages" through other means but warned that seizing his Social Security checks would "substantially affect the resources available" for him to cover his monthly living expenses.

Schneider clarified in the documents that he does not seek forgiveness for the delay in payments but emphasized the practical impact of the proposed deduction on his ability to survive financially. He stated, "I do not seek forgiveness... but I don't want her to take half of my Social Security checks until the debt is paid off."

The dispute stems from a 2019 court order that mandated Schneider pay $25,000 per month in spousal support. Elvira Schneider has been attempting to collect these payments for years. Earlier reports indicated that she claimed he owed more than $2.3 million in back support, plus approximately $1 million in accrued interest.

While Schneider had previously disputed the total amount owed, his recent filings suggest he is accepting the validity of the debt itself while fighting the method of collection. The case highlights the complexities of enforcing spousal support orders across state lines and the legal protections surrounding federal benefits.
